This article analyzes how the boy in Julie Otsuka’s novel When the Emperor Was Divine internalizes race and nationality as a consequence of the Japanese American WWII internment in the 1940s. I draw on primary, historical accounts and secondary, scholarly sources to support my argument. This article has been accepted by Americana for publication.
